QPR High Performance versus Standard Cutbacks & Emulsions

Liquid Binder Overview

QPR High Performance Liquid Blend

The QPR High Performance pavement repair binder is formulated using liquid asphalt cement, cutter stocks, binding adhesives, and anti-stripping agents. The binding adhesives and anti-stripping agents provide the adhesion to the aggregate and provide the qualities needed to perform.

The binding adhesives and anti-stripping agents are very important in the performance of the cold mix. Standard M/C cutback cold mixes don’t have binding adhesives and anti-stripping agents in their liquid formulation. These two ingredients help give the QPR High Performance the workability to perform in a stockpile application over a period of 1 year, but also give excellent package shelf life for up to 2 years.

QPR Liquid Blend is manufactured, formulated and tested by QPR. QPR has complete control of the liquid manufacturing process and can formulate the liquid binder to perform with many different aggregate and weather conditions.

The QPR liquid blend is tested to ASTM standards to maintain the qualities needed to perform in the field.

Some of the critical testing performed is the Liquid Viscosity, Distillation and Aggregate compatibility. These testing requirements are very important in the end result from a performance standpoint but also the work ability to the end user.

Standard MC/Cutbacks & Emulsions

Standard Cutbacks and cold patch mixes have many uses other then cold mix applications. They are generally made from off spec asphalt cements. The cutter stock is added to bring the liquid to a specific viscosity and specification. No binding or anti-stripping agents are added. M.C cutbacks are also used for surface treatments, shoulder stabilization and some RAP programs, but the same liquid formulation is used for all applications and nothing is formulated differently to accommodate cold mix.

Emulsion mixes are general used in the warmer climates because of the water in the formulation, they tend to freeze therefore they are not workable in the colder climates. Emulsion mixes are generally made to use right away and therefore the curing process takes place very rapidly. They have limited shelf life both in bulk or packaged applications.

Aggregate Gradations

QPR High Performance pavement repair material mix gradation is more open graded using slightly larger aggregate with only a small percentage of fines. This gradation gives better workability and greater shelf life. Gradations can be changed to fit the end user needs and also maintain the workability qualities. QPR provides a permanent repair.

Standard cold mix gradations are generally denser graded. These dense graded mixes need a higher percentage of liquid binder to complete the coating of all the aggregate. Because of the dense graded mix the cold mix tends to dry out very rapidly therefore workability is extremely difficult and in a package they have very little shelf life. Standard cold mix is a temporary patch.
